Standard Group in trouble for saying RUTO burnt 35 women and children in a Church

Wednesday November 18, 2015 - Deputy President William Ruto has asked the Standard Media Group to provide evidence to the International Criminal Court (ICC) that him and journalist Joshua Sang were involved in the 2007/ 8 post-election violence. 

On Saturday, the Standard Newspaper wrote an article titled “Stop interfering with court process" that depicted Ruto as the man who burnt 35 innocent women and children in Kiambaa PAG Church during the 2007-08 post election violence.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Ruto asked the Standard Group’s editors and owners to submit evidence that he burnt a church for the sake of justice.

The article said in part leaders organise prayer meetings for Ruto, who is facing crimes against humanity charges, completely oblivious of the fact that there are traumatised survivors.

To these leaders, perhaps the deaths of 35 people in the Kiambaa Church arson attack is a fairy tale. The more than 1,200 people who were needlessly killed are mere statistics.

The plight of more than 60,000 people, who bore the indignity of living as refugees in their own country in sordid conditions for eight years, is inconsequential. Politicking will not determine the outcome of these cases.

Guilt or the absence thereof will be determined by the ICC on the basis of the evidence. Our legislators must desist from interfering in a court process; more so because they believe that the Deputy President is innocent."

In a quick response through social media, Ruto said, "If the editors/owners of Standard have evidence that Sang and I burnt Kenyans in Kiambaa church, why don't they provide it?"

The DP said the media should forward the evidence they have to the ICC to help victims instead of trying to push a hidden agenda.
